University of Houston-Victoria and Victoria College, along with Making the Grade of Victoria, are teaming together in celebrating Math Awareness Week with a math contest for high school students on Tuesday April 22 and a grand celebration on Thursday, April 24 with prize distributions (which include two scholarships)for the contest winners, a lecture on "Number Theory for Internet Security", hands-on internet sessions, a film on math models and supercomputers used for environmental prediction, a tour of our facilities, ending with a pizza party for all attendees.

Prize distribution for high school mathematics competition

4:15-5:00 Concurrent sessions
Lecture: "Number Theory for Internet Security" by Dr. Salam Salloum, UHV

Internet hands-on sessions by Dr. Estella De Los Santos (UHV) in UHV-129 and Dr. Luther Troell (VC) in Technology-210

5:00-5:45 Concurrent sessions
Lecture: "Math in Matter of Seconds", by Ms. Nancy Knobles (Sacred Heart High School, Halletsville)

Internet hands-on sessions by Dr. Estella De Los Santos (UHV) in UHV-129 and Dr. Luther Troell (VC) in Technology-210

5:45-6:00 Film - Application of Numerical Models to Environmental Study and Predictions
6:00-6:30 Brief tour of VC and UHV facilities, followed by pizza

All high school and college students interested in math, teachers of elementary, middle and high schools and colleges teaching or interested in math, and all other members of the community interested in mathematics are cordially invited to attend this celebration of mathematics in our community.

"Mathematics and the Internet" is the theme for Mathematics Awareness Week 1997 which will be observed nationwide from April 20 - 26. In Victoria UH-Victoria, Victoria College, and Making the Grade are teaming together to offer a high school mathematics competition for teams from all Region III high schools and the grand celebration of the 24th.


Mathematics Awareness Month is sponsored each year by the Joint Policy Board for Mathematics to recognize the importance of mathematics through written materials and an accompanying poster that highlight mathematical developments and applications in a particular area.
