A Delicate Balance

As part of a series entitled "Breakthrough: The Changing Face of Science in America," PBS will be airing a one hour program, "A Delicate Balance," on April 22 at 10:00 pm ET, during MAW. During the program:
  • Dr. Freda Porter-Locklear, Pembroke State University, talks about her work in numerical analysis - mathematically modeling the treatment of a fuel spill, and about her career choices.

  • Dr. Richard Tapia, Rice University, discusses numerical optimization - finding efficient solutions to large scale problems - and illustrates interior point techniques.
Breakthrough Announcement
The Breakthrough series is part of an education and outreach campaign, which also includes a web site (listed below); a radio series in Spanish; phone access: 1-800-BIG BREAK; and Science Career Exploration Kits.

Mathematics Awareness Month is sponsored each year by the Joint Policy Board for Mathematics to recognize the importance of mathematics through written materials and an accompanying poster that highlight mathematical developments and applications in a particular area.
