Mathematics Awareness Week was celebrated this year with a variety of activities. Through out the week a Poster Exhibition of MAW posters over the years and others with a mathematics theme were exhibited in the Instruction Laboratories Building where the Mathematics and Statistics Department is housed.

The premier events were

  • "Fermat's Last Theorem" a lecture by Dr. Dan Flath adapted from his Lewis-Parker lecture given at the Alabama Association of College Teachers of Mathematics.
  • The annual Chris Nash Scholarship Examination and Mathematics Competition The scholarship is memorial stipend of $400 to the mathematics or statistics major scoring the highest on the exam. This year's winner is Jorge O'Farill. The competition has cash prizes for the highest and second highest scores. The winners were by Dave Roy, first and Jorge O'Farill, second.
Participants of the competition were presented with coffee mugs commemorating Mathematics Awareness Week.

Mathematics Awareness Month is sponsored each year by the Joint Policy Board for Mathematics to recognize the importance of mathematics through written materials and an accompanying poster that highlight mathematical developments and applications in a particular area.
