Lycoming College

We had what we call MAD (Math Awareness Day). On this day we had nine middle schools send one or two teachers with approximately six students to Lycoming for the day. We had numerous sessions which they attended. These included a session on the WWW which was held in one of our computer lab, a session in our planetarium in which mathematical aspects of astronomy were presented, a session on brain teasers, a session on geometry and its applications, a session on probablility, and a session on graphing calculators. All sessions were as hands on as we could make them and all lasted between 30-45 minutes This is the second time that we have organized this MAD and we plan to continue doing so in the future. We sent out a questionnaire afterwords and received very positive responses from the teachers and students that had attended. We also had pizza for lunch...probably the best part for some!

There was also a display in the library dealing with mathematics for the week.

Mathematics Awareness Month is sponsored each year by the Joint Policy Board for Mathematics to recognize the importance of mathematics through written materials and an accompanying poster that highlight mathematical developments and applications in a particular area.
