Math Awareness Week at Goucher College will be celebrated in a variety of ways. There will be a display case in the library showcasing many examples of the decision making process in everyday life, from using computers to assist in making medical decisions to Goucher's student team entry into this year's Mathematical Contest in Modeling. The newspaper will carry an article describing the activities of Math Awareness Week on campus which include displays and films available all week in a student lounge. The highlight of the week will be the Annual Torrey Dinner where awards are traditionally presented to the most outstanding mathematics and computer science students. In addition, an award is given to the winner of the Annual Writing Prize competition which was held in March. The prize is awarded to the student who is judged to have written the clearest solution to a problem. The contest was open to all Goucher students. At the dinner, a Goucher graduate will speak about her role in the mathematics education profession and what challenges lie ahead for her personally and for society with respect to education.

Mathematics Awareness Month is sponsored each year by the Joint Policy Board for Mathematics to recognize the importance of mathematics through written materials and an accompanying poster that highlight mathematical developments and applications in a particular area.
