Community Service Activities
Seventh and eighth graders will participate in a "Mathematics
Riddles" Contest. Students will solve problems that will assist in their preparation
for the TAAS test, administered by Houston Independent School District and
the Texas Education Agency. Students will use decision-making to guess the
answer to number theory problems.

College Level Activities
Teams of students enrolled in College Algebra will prepare:
(1) 5 Bulletin Boards in classrooms and the computer laboratory
(2) A mathematics newsletter will be prepared and distributed during
April, 1996
(3) A panel discussion will be held in April, 1996. Topic: Mathematics
and Decision-making (Using statistical data to support opinions
relating to Affirmative Action.)

(4) Students will design and conduct an assessment of activities to determine
interests and peer evaluation of the Central College MAW projects for 1996.
(5) Class activities include completion of projects to determine minimum
cost for packaging basketballs to be sent to students in South Africa.
Students are to estimate the cost of sending inflated basketballs in a rectangular
box of specified dimensions. Minimum conditions are given in the problem
statement so that students will impose their own conditions to complete
the task. Team work and research are encouraged so that students gain real world
experiences while completing the project.
