International Learning Activities

There are lessons and learning activities on each of the international Census at School websites. These ready-to-use activities designed by international teachers help students graph and analyze their own survey data and compare them with national and international results. You can adapt these international lesson plans for use with U.S. Census at School data.

The lessons can be found at the following websites:

Australia: www.abs.gov.au/censusatschool

Canada: www.censusatschool.ca/learning-activities/

New Zealand: www.censusatschool.org.nz/classroom-activities/

South Africa: censusatschool.com/en/links/49-sa

Share Your Census at School Lesson Plans

As you participate in Census at School and create your own activities and lesson plans using Census at School data, we hope you will consider sharing them. The editor of Statistics Education Web (STEW), an online bank of peer-reviewed lesson plans for K–12 teachers of mathematics and science, is accepting submissions of lesson plans that showcase the use of statistical methods and ideas in science and mathematics based on the framework and levels in the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) Report: A Pre-K–12 Curriculum Framework. Please consider submitting your favorite lesson plans according to the STEW template. We also will post published STEW lesson plans relating to Census at School here. For more information about submitting lesson plans, visit www.amstat.org/ASA/Education/STEW/home.aspx.

Other Resources

The NSF-funded AIMS Project: Adapting and Implementing Innovating Material in Statistics developed lesson plans and student activities for teaching introductory statistics concepts aligned with the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) reports. The lessons, which build on implications from educational research, involve students in small and large group discussion, computer explorations, and hands-on activities. AIMS activity topics include data, models and modeling, distribution, center, variability, comparing groups, samples and sampling, inference, and covariation. These activities teach statistical concepts applied in Census at School and were used in the teacher training portion of the U.S. Census at School pilot program.
