2008 FDA/INDUSTRY STATISTICS WORKSHOP – Arlington, Virginia – Registration Deadline: September 8, 2008
The 12th FDA/Industry Statistics Workshop is scheduled for September 15–17 at the Marriott Crystal Gateway in Arlington, Virginia. It is cosponsored by the Biopharmaceutical Section of the American Statistical Association and the Food and Drug Administration Statistical Association.
2009 UNITED NATIONS NATIONAL COMPETITIVE RECRUITMENT EXAMINATION – Deadline: October 31, 2008
The U.S. Department of State encourages qualified U.S. citizens to apply to take the 2009 United Nations (UN) National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE), which will be given in the fields of statistics, administration, economics, finance, information technology, public information, and social affairs. Applicants must be no more than 32 years old as of December 31, 2009, and the application deadline is October 31, 2008. This is a wonderful opportunity that can lead to a promising UN career for bright, young Americans.

64TH DEMING CONFERENCE ON APPLIED STATISTICS – Atlantic City, NJ – December 8–12, 2008
The 64th Deming Conference will be held December 8–12, 2008, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. There will be a total of 12 half-day tutorial sessions based on recently published books running parallel for the first three days (December 8–10). The conference will continue with two two-day short courses on December 11 and 12. Books used for the tutorial sessions and short courses will be sold at appreciable discounts. An exhibition of books about applied statistics will be held during the conference. This conference is sponsored by the ASA’s Biopharmaceutical Section and the ASQ’s Metropolitan Section.

SPORTS STATISTICIANS NEEDED
Longtime ASA member Joseph Hilbe was recently appointed chair of the International Statistical Institute’s (ISI) Sports Statistics Committee. He is seeking statisticians who have an interest in sports statistics to participate in a panel discussion and special contributed papers session at next year’s ISI convention in Durban, South Africa (August 16–22). A focus of the discussions will be Olympic sports, but research related to other sports areas is welcome. Participants need not be members of the ISI. Interested statisticians should contact Joseph Hilbe.
NSF 2009 GRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP COMPETITION
The National Science Foundation invites you to apply for the 2009 Graduate Research Fellowship (NSF-GRFP) competition. This program offers up to three years of graduate school support—worth more than $120,000—to each award winner. Benefits include a $30,000 annual stipend, a $10,500 annual cost-of-education allowance, a one-time $1,000 travel allowance, and access to TeraGrid supercomputing facilities. U.S. citizens, nationals, and permanent residents at or near the beginning of their graduate study seeking research-based master’s and/or PhD degrees in NSF-supported science (including social science and psychology) and engineering disciplines are eligible to apply. The application process is now open and will close in early November 2008.
SEEKING ARTICLES FOR NEW AMSTAT NEWS COLUMN FOR GOVERNMENT STATISTICIANS
Amstat News introduced a monthly column for government statisticians in the June 2008 issue. The first column featured an article by Katherine K. Wallman, chief statistician at the Office of Management and Budget. If you are a statistician working in the government and would like to contribute an article about what you do, contact Martha Aliaga, ASA director of programs, at or Megan Murphy, Amstat News managing editor.
ASA VISA CARD PROGRAM
The ASA VISA card program is a benefit for ASA members. When you use your ASA credit card, you will contribute to ASA programs, such as statistics education initiatives, and help the ASA maintain low membership dues. Credit cards are only available to U.S. citizens with U.S. mailing addresses.
