NIH SOLICITS PROPOSALS FOR STATISTICAL ANALYSIS – Deadline: September 20, 2007
NIH just released a request for proposals, Methods of Statistical Analysis of DNA Sequence Data for Studies Relating Variation to Disease (R01) (RFA-MH-08-040). This is an NIH-wide activity with primary responsibility at the National Institute of Mental Health. The deadline for applications is September 20, 2007.

JSM PROCEEDINGS SUBMISSION
Submissions for the 2007 JSM Proceedings for posters and papers orally presented in Salt Lake City will be accepted August 1 through October 8, 2007. If you presented your paper or poster in person, you are eligible to publish in the JSM Proceedings. For templates and more information, visit the JSM 2007 web page or contact Val Snider. Keep an eye out for an email with instructions and a template, and don't forget to set your spam blockers to accept emails from addresses ending with @amstat.org.

BRADLEY EFRON AWARDED THE NATIONAL MEDAL OF SCIENCE
Bradley Efron, a past-president of the ASA, was selected to receive the National Medal of Science. Established by Congress in 1959 and administered by the National Science Foundation, the medal is the nation's highest scientific honor. Efron was cited "for his contributions to theoretical and applied statistics, especially the bootstrap sampling technique; for his extraordinary geometric insight into nonlinear statistical problems; and for applications in medicine, physics, and astronomy."
NEW ASA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR TAKES OFFICE
Ron Wasserstein has joined the ASA staff as the 24th secretary and executive director of the association. Previously, Ron served as the vice president of academic affairs at Washburn University. Ron has a long relationship with the ASA having served as a member of the Board of Directors and as former president of the Kansas-Western Missouri Chapter, as well as having been named a distinguished Fellow of the ASA in 2003. Ron joined the Washburn faculty in 1984, he was tenured in 1990 and promoted to professor of statistics in 1996. Wasserstein received his Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees in statistics from Kansas State University and a BA in mathematics from Washburn University.
ASA PRESENTS 2007 FOUNDERS AWARDS
The American Statistical Association presented its 2007 Founders Awards to ASA members who have rendered distinguished service to the association. The awards were presented during the Presidential Address and Awards session at the 2007 Joint Statistical Meetings in Salt Lake City, Utah. The 2007 winners are George Cobb, Katherine Wallman, and Gary McDonald.
7TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON HEALTH POLICY STATISTICS
Contributed abstract submissions are being accepted for the International Conference on Health Policy Statistics (ICHPS). Submit your abstract through October 1, 2007. Information about the conference keynote speaker, invited sessions, and workshops also is available there.
