NIH SOLICITS PROPOSALS FOR STATISTICAL ANALYSIS – Deadline: September 20, 2007
NIH just released a request for proposals, titled "Methods of Statistical Analysis of DNA Sequence Data for Studies Relating Variation to Disease (R01) (RFA-MH-08-040)." This is an NIH-wide activity with primary responsibility at the National Institute of Mental Health. The deadline for applications is September 20, 2007.
JSM PROCEEDINGS SUBMISSION – Deadline: October 8, 2007
Submissions for the 2007 JSM Proceedings for papers orally presented in Salt Lake City will be accepted August 1 through October 8, 2007.

The First Workshop for Chairs of Programs in Statistics and Biostatistics will be held in Salt Lake City Friday and Saturday, July 27–28.
NISS/ASA WRITING WORKSHOP FOR JUNIOR RESEARCHERS – Salt Lake City, Utah – July 29, 2007
The ASA and National Institute of Statistical Sciences (with funding from the National Science Foundation) will jointly sponsor a writing workshop for junior researchers in Salt Lake City.
CAREER DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR – Salt Lake City, Utah – July 29, 2007
Make your JSM plans now to attend a FREE career development seminar on Sunday, July 29. Walter W. Piegorsch, professor at the University of Arizona and joint editor of the Journal of the American Statistical Association, will dispel negative myths about publishing and give some guidelines on how to manage the publication process in a seminar titled "You Don’t Need To Perish in Order To Publish."
MEETING WITHIN A MEETING (MWM): ASA PROGRAM FOR MATH/SCIENCE TEACHERS – Salt Lake City, Utah – July 30, 2007
The first MWM will take place during JSM this summer in Salt Lake City. MWM is for middle school/junior high math and science teachers who want to enhance their understanding and teaching of statistics within the math/science curriculum.
BEYOND AP STATISTICS (BAPS) WORKSHOP – Salt Lake City, Utah – July 31, 2007
The ASA/NCTM Joint Committee is pleased to sponsor a Beyond AP Statistics (BAPS) Workshop at the annual Joint Statistical Meetings in Salt Lake City on July 31 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The BAPS workshop is offered for AP Statistics teachers and consists of enrichment material just beyond the basic AP syllabus. The cost of the workshop is $30, which covers all materials.
NEW LEARNSTAT COURSE: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE FUNDAMENTALS & FUNCTIONALITY OF THE R LANGUAGE – Alexandria, Virginia – October 18–19, 2007
New LearnSTAT course for the fall: An Introduction to the Fundamentals & Functionality of the R Language. This two-day, hands-on workshop will introduce R, the free interactive programming language and environment for statistical computing and graphics.

BRADLEY EFRON AWARDED THE NATIONAL MEDAL OF SCIENCE
Bradley Efron, a past president of the ASA, was selected to receive the 2005 National Medal of Science, the White House announced recently. Established by Congress in 1959 and administered by the National Science Foundation, the medal is the nation’s highest scientific honor. Efron was cited "for his contributions to theoretical and applied statistics, especially the bootstrap sampling technique; for his extraordinary geometric insight into nonlinear statistical problems; and for applications in medicine, physics, and astronomy."

It’s time to begin thinking about JSM Proceedings. The deadline for submitting papers orally presented in Salt Lake City is October 8, 2007. The submission site will open August 1. Keep an eye out for an email with instructions and a template, and don’t forget to set your spam blockers to accept emails from addresses ending with @amstat.org.
7TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON HEALTH POLICY STATISTICS
Contributed abstract submissions are now being accepted for the International Conference on Health Policy Statistics (ICHPS). Submit your abstract through October 1, 2007. Information about the conference keynote speaker, invited sessions, and workshops also is available there.

JOURNAL OF STATISTICAL RESEARCH SPECIAL ISSUE – CALL FOR PAPERS
The Journal of Statistical Research (JSR) is going to publish a special issue in honor of Professor Mir Maswood Ali, Professor Emeritus, University of Western Ontario. Colleagues, friends, well wishers, and former students of Ali are invited to contribute papers (both applied and theoretical). The papers are due no later than December 31, 2007.
