Developing an Undergraduate Major in Data Science: A Statistician's Perspective (304945)

*Amy G Froelich, Iowa State University

Keywords: undergraduate, curriculum, multidisciplinary

Like many other colleges and universities, Iowa State University recently established new undergraduate programs, including a minor, certificate, and major, in the field of Data Science. A committee of faculty and administrators from the Departments of Statistics and Computer Science, and from the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Engineering were charged with developing the curriculum for the new Bachelor of Science in Data Science program. In this poster, I will describe the process of developing the curriculum for the major. I will discuss some of the issues that arose as a part of the committee's work and how we arrived at solutions to these issues. I will finish with some general recommendations for statisticians and data scientists who may be involved in multidisciplinary curriculum work in the future.
