Obtaining R01 grant funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is seen as a key element in advancing and continuing a career in academic research and moving up to leadership positions. Past studies have noted that, while men and women may start on an even footing, due to a variety of factors women continue to lag behind in advancing their careers and obtaining more prestigious higher-funded grants. NIH published reports show funding success for both genders to be trending downward, however, the percentage of women receiving R01 grant funding has been increasing. Preliminary evaluation of NIH data for fiscal years 2000-2017 confirm this finding but also indicate that not all gender specific subpopulations may be experiencing the same progress. This study will (1) analyze funding success trends among gender subpopulations by various demographic factors for R01-equivalent grants, and (2) identify and understand how those factors are contributing to gender disparities.
