Race Counts: Crunching Data for Racial Justice in California (303914)

*Yvonne Yen Liu, Advancement Project California

Keywords: race, disparities, california, data visualization

California has been a majority-minority state since 2015. However, disparate outcomes persist between races. Blacks, for example, are incarcerated 17 times more than whites per 1,000 persons. The Race Counts project endeavored to capture data on disparities on multiple fronts—economic, criminal justice, health, education, and built environment—and distill racial differences into a single index of disparity. The index was designed in collaboration with grassroots, racial justice organizations from across the state. The index of disparity is methodologically rigorous—quantifying racial differences—yet accessible to broad audiences. The results frame how we can conceive racial equity and build strategies towards lifting up all.
