Building on the success of project based learning techniques, we designed an undergraduate course in machine learning, guided and driven by participation in competitions on Kaggle: students are divided into teams, work on Kaggle competition tasks, and theory lectures are introduced as and when needed for the competition tasks.
In this presentation, we share experiences and observations from the first instance of the course: describe and evaluate the course design.
