Launched in 2014, Columbia’s Master of Science in Data Science is a 30-credit three semester program that allows students to apply data science techniques to their field of interest. It is a highly selective program that attracts students with a broad range of backgrounds. Our students have the opportunity to conduct original research, included in a capstone project, and interact with our industry partners and faculty. We offer an evolving array of elective courses that cover current methodologies and tools in data science such as causal inference and deep learning. Project-based learning is a focus of many courses and reproducibility is emphasized throughout the curriculum. In this talk, we will also discuss the challenge of providing students with a solid foundation in data science through core courses while allowing them to take a diverse set of electives and experience the entire data science workflow.
