Depending on project needs, there are many useful public databases that can provide answers to a wide variety of research questions. Statistical consulting provides an opportunity to utilize these different resources and gain necessary education on the design of the survey for potential analyses. From identifying trends in the risk of injury in particular motor vehicle accidents, ascertaining how people spend their time, or investigating patient characteristics and costs of specific procedures or diagnoses, these databases are rich sources to respond to research questions or litigation support. Example projects using National Inpatient Sample (NIS), American Time Use Survey (ATUS), Medicare 5% sample, and National Automotive Sampling System (NASS) Crashworthiness Data System (CDS) and General Estimates System (GES) will be presented, highlighting reasons for the database selection, analysis, results, and limitations.
