Abstract:
|
This study aims to examine the potential differences in health conditions and acute service use between sexual and gender minorities and matched heterosexual controls. The study uses a matched case-control study design guided by the Gelberg-Anderson behavioral model for vulnerable populations. The analysis will use data from the New York State Office of Mental Health administrative and survey data systems. A descriptive data analysis of acute service utilization will be presented. Generalized estimation equation (GEE) models accounting for matching pairs with a binomial or Poisson distribution and an appropriate working correlation structure will be explored to model the emergency department visit counts and inpatient stays. Predisposing characteristics, enabling and need variables, and risk factors known to influence service use will be examined. We will discuss results from the GEE models, the relative health profile of sexual minorities and the likelihood of using an inpatient or emergency department service.
