We give an introduction to the analysis of in-game eSports data. Our focus will be on the types of data that are available, the kinds of problems one might try to solve using the data, and similarities and differences between eSports analytics and traditional sports analytics. We will present several examples of team and player data from the game Defense of the Ancients 2 (DOTA2), with a heavy emphasis on using visualizations to understand more about the data. We also give examples of using eSports data in the classroom when presenting regression, classification, and clustering methods. Knowledge of eSports is not assumed, though knowledge of sports and sports analytics will be helpful.
