Abstract:
|
The key aim of the European Social Survey it to produce high quality data that is comparable between over 25 countries in Europe and across time. In order to do this the ESS Core Scientific Team uses a number of tools. These include the publication of an overall survey specification and detailed protocols for each stage of the survey life cycle. In addition to the protocols there is careful coordination between the core team and national teams with regard to sampling, questionnaire design and adaptation, translation, fieldwork planning and monitoring, data processing and weighting. This presentation will provide an overview of the ESS approach across the survey life cycle and provide a more detailed discussion of examples areas. The optimal balance between centralized approaches and local autonomy will be discussed.
