Title: Updating the Current Population Survey Processing System and Bridging Differences in the Measurement of Poverty
Author(s): Ashley Edwards and John Creamer*
Companies: U.S. Census Bureau and U.S. Census Bureau
Keywords: poverty estimates; Current Population Survey
Abstract:

This paper documents poverty changes over time with the updated processing system for calendar years 2016 and 2017. We compare poverty estimates across the CPS ASEC legacy and updated processing system, evaluating the incremental impact of changes in both the demographic and income content on poverty rates across demographic groups. Presenting this research at the Joint Statistical Meetings allows data users to understand the motivation, impact, and interpretation of these data processing changes on estimates of income and poverty in the United States.
