This talk contrasts the use of Statistics and Machine Learning in the technology sector and examines on what problems each may be appropriate. It notes that ML-type methods are typically used when model validation is easy (prediction problems) whereas traditional statistical methods are often used when validation is hard (causal problems). It then comments on how these findings are relevant to the consulting industry and how analysts should be leveraging methods from both fields when trying to solve a problem.
