Abstract:

This study investigated to what extent school resources, particularly the instruction time, moderate the relationship between students' family backgrounds and their science achievement. Using the 2011 TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) data, a multilevel modeling analysis was conducted to analyze 1) whether the relationship between students' familial factors (frequency of speaking English at home and socioeconomic status) and science achievement varies across schools holding students' gender constant; 2) whether and how science instruction hours moderate the relationship between home resources and science achievement. The results showed the science instruction hours at school weaken the relationship between students' home resources and their science achievement holding students' gender and language proficiency constant. The findings would help to inform the policy makers of using school resources as a way to narrow the achievement gaps of students with different home resources and to improve education equity.
