Title: Redesigning Introduction to Biostatistics
Author(s): Kari Lock Morgan*
Companies: Penn State University
Keywords: intro stat ; biostatistics ; simulation-based inference ; case studies ; investigative process ; GAISE
Abstract:

This talk will discuss a redesign of Introduction to Biostatistics at Penn State, although the changes discussed are just as applicable to a general introductory statistics course. The first goal of this redesign was to change the way inference was taught by introducing inference using simulation-based methods. The second goal was to shift the focus to using data to answer interesting questions by designing each class and lab to address a real question from the biological sciences. This talk will discuss the changes, challenges, and resulting improvement on learning.
