Abstract:

Statistical consulting with domain-based researchers has historically been offered by departments of Statistics and Biometry. Masters and PhD students may have been offered some formal coursework in consulting, but much of their learning was hands on. As demand for services has grown and become more diverse, formal consulting centers have evolved. However, training of both Masters and PhD students in consulting has not always kept up with these changes. As a result, many universities, including University of Nebraska - Lincoln (UNL), found that their students were no longer receiving adequate training. The Statistics Department at UNL has revised curriculum for both Masters and PhD students to include training in statistical collaboration and consulting, integrating training with the required Masters methods course sequence. The Statistical Cross-disciplinary Collaboration and Consulting Lab (SC3L), staffed by paid PhD students and those in the consulting course, is a walk-in center for UNL students and faculty. This presentation describes how SC3L is used in training our students, future changes and what obstacles still need to be overcome.
