Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease(COPD) is one of the most common obstructive lung disease characterized by chronically poor airflow. Recent studies have suggested that unique miRNA expression profiles exist in inflammatory lung disease such as COPD, yet the association between microRNA and mRNA for different emphysema expressions with COPD has not been adequately studied. In our paper, we have studied specific type of mRNAs that are directly linked to the emphysema expressions by microRNAs and examined how different emphysema expressions can alter mRNAs by miRNAs by using generalized linear mixed models. Furthermore, we present a gene network that describes what specific mRNAs are regulated by significant microRNAs. Our study suggests that the understanding of direct relationship between microRNAs and emphysema expressions change by various microRNAs can be potentially applicable to future patient-specific treatment based on the emphysema expression.
