In an academic consulting center, metrics are commonly used to assess impact and activity. Although it's easy to come up with ideas on what should be measured, defining truly effective and informative metrics can be very challenging. They need to be understandable to the desired audience, comparable over time and possibly to peer groups, and free from subjectivity and possible manipulation. Furthermore they need to be actionable and not just informational. In this talk, I will provide an overview of a variety of metrics currently used by consulting centers as well as provide my opinions on their effectiveness and what we might consider moving forward.
