Title: Assessing Compliance with EPA Standards: An Appreciation of Larry Cox's Work as an EPA Scientist.
Author(s): Richard Smith*
Companies: University of North Carolina Chapel Hill/SAMSI
Keywords: Time series ; Spatial statistics ; Extreme value theory
Abstract:

EPA standards are typically defined in terms of either the means or the extremes of criteria pollutants including ozone and particulate matter. Larry Cox was a passionate advocate of statistical methods to assess compliance with standards and measures of whether air quality is improving over time. This talk will discuss techniques from time series analysis, spatial statistics and extreme value theory, to make such assessments and to quantify their uncertainties.
