Title: The Recipe and Execution of the Dish from the Side of Internal Statistical Consultant
Author(s): Todd Sanger*
Companies: Eli Lilly and Company
Keywords: Consulting ; Internal
Abstract:

In broad strokes, this panel has divided the field of statistical consulting according to three different consultant-client relationships: consulting for academic clients, consulting for internal corporate clients, and consulting for external corporate clients. In this presentation we discuss from start to finish the consulting/collaboration procedure from the internal corporate side. Within corporations there is a greater recognition by upper management of the strategic importance of analytics. As a result, internal analytics groups are growing in size and importance. Analytics skills are too important to not have an internal capability. There is also a desire to keep strategic analytical capabilities internal to the company instead of using an external analytics company who are perceived to spread the capability to competitors or to be unduly influenced by the desired outcome of the external client. We will discuss how the internal statistical group would tackle the problem. What questions we would ask and how we would interact with the internal business partner. We discuss the challenges we face when dealing with and analyzing data and how we overcome these.
