Abstract:
|
In broad strokes, this panel has divided the field of statistical consulting according to three different consultant-client relationships: consulting for academic clients, consulting for internal corporate clients, and consulting for external corporate clients. In this presentation we discuss from start to finish the consulting/collaboration procedure from the academic side. In academia the shift is towards collaboration as opposed to consulting. With collaboration defined as the activity where the statistician is an equal participant in the study from the design all the way to writing the research paper, not just analysing the collected data. We start with the types of questions asked to get background on the problem, the papers read to prepare for the project. We then talk about the negotiations involved in terms of remuneration and deliverables. We include in our discussion the ideas of ownership of intellectual property and dissemination of results. We discuss the challenges we face when dealing with and analysing data and how we overcame these.
