Abstract:

The Institute of Medicine has identified a need for more and better research focused on sexual and gender minorities. Our ability to conduct insightful and meaningful analyses within this group is significantly hampered by our inability to identify and systematically study individuals who are sexual and gender minorities. In this paper we explore our ability to use Medicare provider billing data to identify and describe individuals who may be transgender. Using 2013 Medicare claims files, we employ a combination of diagnosis and condition codes to identify transgender individuals enrolled in the Medicare program. We will discuss our methodology and describe the demographic characteristics of those identified in the study. There is a growing body of evidence suggesting that older adults who are both gender minorities and aged may be vulnerable to significantly poorer health access and outcomes. To our knowledge this study is the first attempt to use Medicare data to identify and describe the demographic characteristics and disease burden of Medicare beneficiaries who are transgender.
