Abstract:
|
Ratios are useful in a variety of settings, including surface to volume ratios in biology, Ka to Ks ratios in genetics, track way ratios in dinosaur gaits, and interest rate paid per amount of credit used in business. Consider the problem of k independent samples drawn from bivariate Normal populations (X1, Y1),., (Xk, Yk) with common but unknown variance-covariance matrix S. Interest lies in the unknown mean ratios aj = µYj / µXj for j = 1,.,k. The authors investigate several procedures to test for the equality of the k mean ratios, aj. This investigation includes a comparison of test statistics based on the ratios of the mean, the mean of ratios, and linear combinations of the two variates. The powers of several proposed tests are compared via simulation. In addition, estimates of a, the common mean ratio, are derived from these tests. The authors suggest conditions under which a test may be more appropriate for use than its competitors.
