Abstract:

The SATS-36 survey gauges six attitude components towards statistics (e.g., interest, value, difficulty). In a previous work, we compared the attitudes of 12 groups of students enrolled in introductory statistics classes during the first week of the course to their attitudes after the last class. The changes in attitudes were overall negative, and minor differences in the changes could be seen for males vs. females and between majors. In this followup study we examine the change in attitudes for ten new classes. We have added new questions to the survey to control for students' attitudes towards mathematics and how mathematical a student perceives a statistics class to be. We also control for the student's cumulative grade in studying the difference between initial and final attitudes.
