Abstract:

This study proposed statistical methods as tools in identifying the optimal coding framework for qualitative research. Selecting a coding framework is an essential step in data analysis of qualitative research. Based on the selected theoretical framework, researchers code the transcripts to identify the presence of a particular target. It is an inevitable challenge to pick a framework when there are two or more competing candidate frameworks. We present statistical methods based on Minimum Description Length (MDL) principle and other techniques to resolve this dilemma. We discuss the definition and criteria of being "optimal" framework and how these criteria are incorporated in the proposed methods. Suggestions and recommendations are offered to qualitative researchers. We illustrate the proposed methods using data from a study investigating how students solving mathematical problems.
