Abstract

There is a growing recognition that current approaches to cybersecurity are ineffective in providing safer and more secure computational infrastructures. Many believe it is more appropriate to assume that defensive measures can (or have been) compromised, and focus on what can be secured in such a situation, than to focus primarily on perimeter defense. Further, trends as diverse as cloud computing, intertwined cyber/physical infrastructures, and pervasive and powerful mobile devices make perimeter defense problematic. In this discussion we identify emerging trends and research challenges in cybersecurity, and identify areas in which science-based statistical approaches may be effective in yielding proactive solutions.
