Description

A century ago the concept of lesbians and gay males was just beginning to taking shape in Western societies. Today lesbian and gay male populations are the subject of much open discussion in the general media and present issues of increasing concern and interest to the public health community. However, basic health information about these populations is lacking, and even the means for identifying and defining these groups has not been well-established. This presents a considerable challenge for survey methods, a challenge that is taken up in different ways by the three papers in this session. It is very much in keeping with the JSM 2001 theme of "statistical science for the information age." Innovations in statistical sampling and survey methods are required to collect information from members of relatively rare populations when membership itself is sensitive. Recently the Lesbian Services Program at the Whitman-Walker Clinic, a community-based health care provider in Washington DC, initiated an extensive needs assessment of the lesbian population in its catchment area. Sylvia Fisher of the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Office of Survey Methods Research will report on the results, including preference for identifying terms, the decision to "come out," and access to health care and concerns about institutionalized homophobia. Lillian Lin from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will discuss a randomized trial of a community-level intervention to promote safer sex practices among young men who have sex with men. The study employed a two-stage time-place sampling protocol, using a dynamic sampling frame of venues. The third speaker, Joseph Catania, will present findings from a national telephone study of gay urban men. The discussant for the session, Brad Edwards, is the chair of ASA's Committee on Gay and Lesbian Concerns in Statistics. A vice president and associate area director at Westat, he has longstanding interests in survey research methods and collecting data from difficult to reach populations.
