View Presentation *Joann Boughman, American Society of Human Genetics Keywords: Negotiation skills are not a part of our training as scientific professionals, and negotiating does not come naturally to many. Successful negotiation depends on full recognition of the needs and goals of both parties, as well as understanding the organizational structure and culture of both groups. Thoughtful preparation is the key to a successful negotiation, and pleasant but persistent efforts usually make the process smoother. It is essential to ask for what you want, but settle for what you need, and no less. Options and potential consequences of the outcomes should not be surprises if negotiators are properly prepared.
