The use of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) has increased dramatically in the US, and health researchers and clinicians are looking for methods to make sense of the enormity of the data. Data visualization is an essential skill for a statistician’s toolbox that can aid in making sense of the EHR big data. SAS provides various options for creating graphics for a variety of skill sets, from the easy-to-implement PROCs SGPLOT and SGPANEL to the more complex but more flexible Graph Template Language. This poster presentation will demonstrate and compare the use of PROC SGPANEL with PROC TEMPLATE’s LAYOUT DATAPANEL and LAYOUT LATTICE. We will discuss the pros and cons of each approach, data manipulation techniques for graphing purposes, and examine sample sets of code. We apply these methods to an ongoing longitudinal study of seven community health centers that implemented a new insurance tool in the EHR.
