Statistics in Defense (303024)

*Victoria Cox, Dstl

Keywords: defence, biological, chemical, explosives, land systems, analysis, doe

Dstl (Defence Science and Technology Laboratory) is known as the first port of call for science and technology and, as such, requires good statistical consultancy to help achieve this. Statisticians at Dstl are required to work across many areas, providing advice on design of experiments (DoE) and analysis. Our role ensures that trials, experiments, and research are carried out both cost efficiently and in a way that produces worthwhile data which, once analyzed and presented in a nonstatistician-friendly format, will lead to evidence-based decisionmaking (EBDM). This poster consists of a small selection of the areas within Dstl: chemical, biological, explosives, and land systems. Each section has some of the problems faced in defense, with specific questions highlighted, along with some of the explanatory variables. It also shows some of the statistical techniques used to overcome these issues. One example where statisticians have been involved is with The Porton Man, which is a robotic mannequin built to test protective suits and equipment for the UK armed forces.
