TL30: Emergency! Don't Send That Patient Home!! (300370)

Keywords: statistics, vaccines, data mining, text mining, visualization

Is that ER visit serious? If so, what’s the cause? Will the patient be admitted?

Answers to these questions will be revealed through an A to Z analysis ranging from data preparation to data mining/predictive modeling and text mining to visualization of results.

The scenario: The Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) was created by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to receive reports about adverse events that may be associated with vaccines. Doctors and other vaccine providers are encouraged to report adverse events.

The challenge: Establish drivers for a condition being diagnosed as “serious” based on a set of attributes, including ER notes, and develop the likelihood of a serious condition.

The value: Better analytics and reporting helps keep vaccines safe for you and your family, and for everyone who receives vaccinations. Each VAERS report provides valuable information that helps FDA & CDC make sure that vaccines are safe.

SAS solutions used will be SAS Studio, Enterprise Miner/Text Miner, and Visual Analytics.
